Plozza
The story of Plozza Vini begins on March 19, 1919. A 29-year-old Rhaetian Railway employee gets out of a train in Tiefencastel and laboriously rolls a 50-liter wine barrel over a ramp. Pietro Plozza tries to sell the wine by the liter to hotels, shops and private individuals. In the following years Pietro Plozza built wineries in Brusio and Tirano. January 29, 1973 was a big chapter in Plozza history. Plozza SA Brusio was founded with seven shareholders. This was followed by the new building in Brusio, with which the storage capacity was expanded to 2.5 million liters. In 1989 the wine trading company Kaufmann AG in Davos and in 1994 the Weinhaus Cottinelli AG in Malans were acquired.
Philosophy
What the winemakers have achieved in the Valtellina in the past can truly be described as heroic. The steep slopes of this valley seemed anything but ideal for cultivating vineyards. The winemakers of that time recognized, however, that wonderful grapes would grow in this sun-drenched location, if only the opportunity was created.
In unbelievable work they built over 2500 kilometers of dry stone masonry on the slopes of the 50 kilometer long vineyard area. Thousands of stones were built in, creating one of the largest terraced wine-growing areas in the world. That was more than 2000 years ago!
The Valtellina Nebbiolo grapes still grow on these sunny terraces and are harvested by hand - vine by vine. In addition, the Mediterranean climate and the excellent soil conditions form further excellent foundations for the production of Veltliner wines. With the Nebbiolo grape, the same grape variety is pressed for the Valtellinas as for the expensive Barolos from Piedmont.
In addition to the natural conditions, it also takes a lot of passion and the creativity of the people who work in the vineyard and in the cellar to make extract-rich, powerful and at the same time noble wines from this wonderful raw material. For us, creativity was and is an important factor in our corporate philosophy. We were among the pioneers in Sforzato production and in 1946 we were the first to bring the Sforzato onto the market.
And even today we strive to constantly create new and really different Valtellinas in order to be able to successfully refute the sometimes still dusty image of the Veltliner.
Two other decisive factors in the production of excellent wines are time and optimal expansion options. For this reason, we decided in 2000 to no longer press the wines in the large concrete tanks, but in fermentation tanks of the latest generation and then let them mature for years in chestnut / oak barrels or in barriques. However, this changeover requires time, space and, last but not least, a high financial outlay, since the expensive wooden barrels can be used a maximum of three times. However, numerous awards show that this effort is worthwhile.
And so we will continue to try in the future to transform the treasures of the Valtellina into outstanding, modern wines with a lot of passion, creativity and ideas. This in great gratitude to our ancestors of yore.
