Jean Marie Chaland
The Domaine currently covers 9.5 hectares divided into 23 plots in 3 different villages – Viré, Montbellet and Burgy – and 4 appellations:
Viré-Clessé: 5.6 hectares
Mâcon-Villages and Mâcon: 2.22 hectares
Bourgogne rouge: 0.66 hectare
Mâcon-Burgy: 0.8 hectare
Jean-Marie's grandfather, Victor Chaland, began cultivating grapes in the 1930s. His father, Jean-Noël, took over in 1967 and created the Domaine’s first blended wine. Jean-Marie founded the Domaine Sainte Barbe, with a surface area of 4 hectares, in 2000.
The vineyards have always been managed and tilled without synthetic herbicides. This respect for the soil and the expression of their terroirs enabled them to obtain Organic certification in 2003.
