Can Sumoi
Can Sumoi, between the forest and the vineyard in the Montmell Mediterranean High Altitude Natural Wines
CAN SUMOI: AN ABANDONED ESTATE
Can Sumoi takes its name from an integrated estate in Baix Penedès (Serra de l’home, el Montmell), at 600 meters above sea level.
Can Sumoi, an estate that dates back to 1645 and stands out due to the solitude of the surrounding landscape, the mineral nakedness of its soils and its unique geology. Can Sumoi has a main winery and three farmhouses dating back to the end of the 17th century where wine used to be made, a house for the tenant farmers, a poultry yard, 20 hectares of vineyard of more than 50-year-old planted with Montònega and Sumoll and 380 hectares of woodland.
The estate and its vineyards had been abandoned for more than 20 years. In 2017 the Raventós family recovered the abandoned estate and vineyards to produce natural wines with minimal intervention, and with the aim to turn this estate into a living farm organism for future generations.
WE RECOVER LOCAL VARIETIES AND LOST VINEYARDS WORKING AS A TEAM WITH LOCAL FARMERS
THE VINEYARDS’ ORIGIN FOR OUR WINES
Following one of our purposes and vision: recovering varieties and lost vineyards in the middle of Penedès; we teamwork with local, vocational, certified organic winegrowers.
We winegrower vineyards in the Mountain of Montmell (350-700 m), where our estate Can Sumoi is located. Mediterranean litoral and continental climate.
At the Can Sumoi estate we recovered the 20 hectares of vineyards with an average age of 50 years, where the Sumoll and Montònega varieties are grown.
We also work as a team with local winegrowers from the same area of Mountain of Montmell. All with organic certificates, defending the maximum price of grape/Kg in the region.
The soil of the vines that extend around the Montmell Massif are calcareous, stony and poorly developed soils, which bring freshness, elegance, finesse and tension to the wines.
MAKING NATURAL WINES WITH MINIMAL INTERVENTION
Our purpose is to produce natural, high-altitude wines with the least possible intervention in all the processes of both viticulture and winemaking.
100% organic cultivation, manual harvest and all pressed in cellar and only native yeasts.
Production of pure wines following the minimum intervention protocol without any oenological additives added during vinification. Only a minimum of sulfites in bottling, following the recent French Méthode Vin Nature regulations- there are no more than 30mg/L of sulfites per wine.
Can Sumoi is a way of understanding life. We are obsessed with making the most delicious non -intervention wine in the most sustainable way because we care about the planet - just like you.
FORESTRY AND FAUNA MANAGEMENT TO RECOVER BIODIVERSITY AND HAVE A POSITIVE EFFECT ON THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND RESOURCES IMPROVEMENT.
As much as we can we want to bring our grain of sand to contribute to a much sustainable, respectful agriculture winemaking. Wine, people and nature, that's why we became WINEACTIVIST.
Can Sumoi goes beyond recovering lost vineyards and local varieties for the production of natural wines; we protect 380 ha of forest on this estate; and we want to help protect other green lungs in the world.
We are authentic and responsible. We imagine a healthy and prosperous world where humanity is committed to caring for and valuing nature for the long-term benefit of all people and our land.
To do this, we have developed a solid foundation based on knowledge, working with associations and foundations to help the environment such as: The Forestry Association of the Tarragona Region or Stand for Trees.
Can Sumoi agricultural estate from 1645 at 660m of altitude; beyond the elaboration of pure wines, we recover local varieties in lost vineyards. We protect the 380 ha of forest on the farm and help to maintain other green lungs of the world.
