Lia Tolaini Banville started Banville Wine Merchants as a boutique importer of Italian fine wines and Menabrea beer in 2004. Lia had the desire to grow her company yet keep regional exclusives with her suppliers, which led her in 2016 to expand the portfolio outside of Italy, adding top wine producers from France, Germany and UK. In the process Lia also put together a selected portfolio of specialty Italian spirits. Today the Import portfolio represents over 50 hand-picked brands. Serendipity joined forces with Banville as a distribution partner in July of 2021, and we are thrilled to bring selections from their impressive portfolio to the state of California. (show less)

It's our challenge and our mission to build a company with a diverse portfolio that is focused almost exclusively on small growers, especially ones who practice a non-interventionist approach in the vineyard and in the cellar. We work with winemakers and distillers who respect their land and their history, who do not use a lot of chemicals in their farming nor rely on corrections in their winenmaking and distilling process. We strive to run the company in a way that values our employees and our customers, and provides excellent service by a knowledgeable and professional staff.
The company was founded in the fall of 2003 with a small but solid book of German and French wines and two employees. With a small list of wines, a vision, and a lot of ambition, Bowler began to sell wine to key accounts in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Since then, we have grown to 38 employees and expanded our portfolio considerably. Today we represent wines from most of the major wine regions in the world and work with many of the regions' leaders in quality. In 2016 we acquired our spirits license and have been adding small batch, hand-crafted spirits to our book, too. And we're still growing: we have developed a strong national presence as an importer and our wines and spirits can now be found in many major markets throughout the country. (show less)

Our commitment is to build a sustainable and strong partnership with our wineries, who are family owned and use estate grown fruit, offering the best and an excellent value to our customers.
We venture with partners that use organic and biodynamic farming practices, those that focus on sustainability over long periods of time. Honestly, transparency and quality comes first and that is what drives us. Long term sustainability within the vineyards should also translate through the entire operation of the wine business. The Mad Rose Group is a family-run organization that is composed of a close-knit group of people who understand that wine is an agricultural product and that in its best and purest form wine must reflect a specific sense of place. We share the goal of communicating this concept to a growing audience by presenting the finest examples of wine made in the classical western European tradition.
This endeavor started in 1977 as a humble, one-man retail operation located in New York City but very much outside the mainstream of the wine business. Neal Rosenthal, having stepped away from his corporate and international law practice, conceived of this project. Joined shortly thereafter by his partner, (Ms.) Kerry Madigankerry, the two expanded their fledgling company, known as Rosenthal Wine Merchant (“RWM”), from its retail base to become an importer and distributor of fine wine and specialty food products. As importers, we look for wines with depth of fruit, length and elegance, rather than for obtrusive oak, over-extraction, or excessive alcohol. That said, we don’t tell growers how to make wine because that’s their expertise, not ours. And we don’t work with fatheads, regardless of how good their wine might be, because it’s not worth it. The company focuses on the rich relationships that spring from the community of growers, instead of just the commercial imperative. So we look for people who share sensibilities, and that makes them as important as the wine they produce. The rule is simple: you work with people who make you proud and whose wine you drink at home.
In 2008 we opened V59 Wines, a separate company to distribute our wines in northern and southern California. Since then, this distribution company has carefully expanded beyond its French selection to include similarly-minded growers from around the world. Our warehouse is an old one down in the foggy flats of the East Bay, originally managed by a crazy world-class bike polo playing Norseman and today guided by an an ex-pat lady from Nice. (show less)
